Staff Officer Black holds a minor role in the Dragon Ball series. Described as soft-spoken and quick-witted, he serves as Adjutant Black, carrying out Commander Red’s orders and updating him on the status of remaining Red Ribbon officers. He is notably one of the few black characters to appear in the franchise. When he overhears Red joyfully discussing his ambition to become taller, Black expresses appall, arguing that such madness has cost the Army dearly during Goku’s invasion and may lead to its defeat. Red dismisses Black’s concerns, stating that the lives of soldiers are expendable as long as he achieves his goal, and reminds Black he is merely a lackey. Enraged by this attitude, Black shoots Commander Red in the head, killing him instantly. In the anime adaptation, Goku is offered a position in Black’s new organization, the Black Ribbon Army, but refuses. Goku ultimately kills Black after he attempts to murder him while piloting a robotic suit.
