Simon

Summary

Simon serves as the protagonist of the narrative, initially portrayed as a timid and unassuming fourteen-year-old boy standing at just 156 cm tall. Born in Jiiha Village, he lived with his parents until a catastrophic earthquake triggered an underground avalanche that claimed their lives when he was seven. This traumatic event instilled in him a deep-seated fear and hatred of living underground, a phobia that significantly influenced his bond with Kamina. Despite his community relying on him to expand their subterranean settlements by digging new tunnels, Simon was marginalized by the adults and rejected by the girls, who found him repulsive. Compounded by his anxiety regarding earthquakes, he suffered from low self-esteem and exhibited cowardly behavior. His sole companion and idol was Kamina, an eccentric and bold older boy obsessed with reaching the surface world, a place Kamina had visited in his own childhood. Simon gradually joined Team Gurren under Kamina’s leadership, participating in numerous attempts to ascend to the surface over several years. During one such expedition, a sudden quake sealed the team in a chamber, cutting off their oxygen supply. While Simon panicked, Kamina’s inspiration spurred him to dig them all out to safety. Yoko later noted that Kamina had been terrified during the incident but concealed his fear, recognizing that Simon possessed the unique ability to save his friends. During the excavation of a new tunnel, Simon unearthed a small, glowing drill-shaped object. Shortly thereafter, the village was attacked by a massive Gunmen, and while digging, Simon discovered a large face embedded in the earth. He presented this discovery to Yoko and Kamina, revealing it to be a miniature Gunmen, with the drill object serving as the activation key. Utilizing this mech, which Kamina named Lagann, Simon defeated the attacking Gunmen and successfully emerged into the surface world.
