Dr. Kukui is a Pokémon Expert hailing from the Alola region. He is a passionate man residing in the player's new hometown, where his area of expertise lies in Pokémon moves. He is known for taking direct hits from them if he believes it will help him learn something about them. Alongside Hala, he provides the player and Hau with their starter Pokémon. Lillie assists Dr. Kukui for her own personal reasons.
