Funny Valentine serves as the primary antagonist of Steel Ball Run. As the 23rd President of the United States, he is the true mastermind behind the Steel Ball Run race. He observes the competition from behind the scenes, aiming to collect the Saint's Corpse to utilize this Holy Relic in advancing the interests and power of the United States. He describes his method for achieving this as "taking the first napkin." Valentine places a high value on patriotism and appears deeply concerned with his nation's welfare. Most of his malevolent actions are not driven by selfishness but are committed to secure what he perceives as power for America and to fulfill his objective of establishing the country as the most dominant nation. He is a former soldier who was discharged after enduring torture during a war, leaving him with scars on his back that resemble the Stars and Stripes.
