Tomoe, Souichi

Summary

Known primarily as Professor Tomoe, with the English dub occasionally labeling him Doctor Tomoe, Souichi Tomoe makes his debut in Act 25 of the manga and Episode 90 of the anime. The manga portrays him as thoroughly malevolent, as he voluntarily joins the Death Busters following a laboratory fire that claimed the life of his older wife, Keiko, and severely injured his young daughter, Hotaru Tomoe. His arc concludes when he transforms into Germatoid to battle Sailor Moon, only to be defeated and killed by her Rainbow Moon Heartache attack, remaining dead without any resurrection. Conversely, the anime presents a more sympathetic version of the character, highlighted by bizarre yet hilariously over-the-top mannerisms that provide unexpected humor. It remains unclear whether these traits belong to Germatoid or represent repressed facets of his own personality, given the lack of information about him outside of his possession. His innate kindness surfaces occasionally, revealing him to be a loving father. By the end of the S season, he is depicted as a wheelchair-bound patient in a hospital with no recollection of his involvement with the Death Busters, having dedicated himself to raising the now-infant Hotaru. Professor Tomoe appears one final time in Episode 167, the premiere of the Sailor Stars season, when Sailor Pluto arrives to take baby Hotaru from him. In this scene, he is shown without his glasses and no longer confined to a wheelchair, suggesting his health is improving, before he disappears from the narrative entirely.
