Summary
Known as the "Black Dog" on his home satellite, Jet is a thirty-six-year-old former officer from Ganymede who serves as a foil to Spike throughout the series. Physically imposing with a muscular frame, Jet is completely bald except for the back of his head and sports a beard without a mustache. While Spike projects an air of laziness and disinterest, Jet is hardworking and a jack-of-all-trades. He spent many years as an investigator for the Inter Solar System Police (ISSP) until a corrupt partner betrayed him during an investigation, resulting in the loss of his arm. Although biological replacements were possible, he chose a cybernetic limb to serve as a permanent reminder of the incident. Disgusted by the police force's corruption and his own injury, Jet resigned to become a freelance bounty hunter. Jet considers himself a renaissance man, cultivating bonsai trees, cooking, and enjoying jazz and blues music, particularly Charlie Parker, which inspired the name of his ship. He also has an interest in Goethe. Despite often wishing to be viewed as a brotherly figure to avoid appearing old, he is the quintessential oyaji or "dad" of the group. He is proficient with handguns, typically carrying a pre-2004 Walther P99, and is skilled with a netgun and hand-to-hand combat. Unlike Spike, who relies on technique, Jet tends to use raw muscle. He is also an excellent mechanic and pilot, flying the converted interplanetary fishing trawler Bebop and a smaller salvage-craft named Hammerhead. The Hammerhead features larger engines, fuel tanks, and a mechanical harpoon arm that mirrors Jet’s own prosthetic. Both vessels have a fishing theme and can land on water, reflecting the water-covered surface of Ganymede; the Bebop was originally a fishing ship that Jet customized with larger engines. Later in the series, it is revealed that Jet previously lived with a woman named Alisa, who left him because he was too controlling. They reunite when Alisa’s new boyfriend, Rhint, is wanted for murder. Jet finds himself in a situation reminiscent of Vicious’s past, forced to hunt down a woman who broke his heart and her lover.
