Summary
Tetsuo serves as the sole adult in Mitsui’s delinquent group, which also comprises Norio Hotta, his followers, and various high school troublemakers. Although he appears to be the gang’s leader, he typically yields command to Mitsui during their confrontation with the Shohoku basketball squad. Likely in his late twenties or thirties, Tetsuo is the most seasoned and skilled fighter within the crew. He manages to knock out five Shohoku players, including Rukawa and Miyagi, before being severely defeated by Sakuragi. After Mitsui abandons the gang to return to basketball, Tetsuo encounters him while Mitsui is visiting a doctor for his knee. Tetsuo acknowledges Mitsui’s status as an athlete, which reinforces Mitsui’s choice to rejoin the team. In the anime adaptation, Tetsuo appears again on the morning of Shohoku’s game against Shoyo, when he is ambushed and beaten by the non-Shohoku members of his gang who seek to overthrow his leadership. Mitsui arrives but declines to intervene, honoring his promise to Coach Anzai to stop fighting. Tetsuo attempts to protect Mitsui but is knocked unconscious. Fortunately, Sakuragi and his gang arrive to help the basketball players escape, leading Tetsuo to ally with Sakuragi’s crew to defeat Ryu and his associates.
