Summary
At first glance, Abel appears to be merely a clumsy and absent-minded Catholic priest, but this is a facade for his true identity as an ancient Crusnik, a vampire of extraordinary power who is hundreds of years old. Unlike typical vampires, he sustains himself by feeding on the blood of other vampires. Despite his immense strength, Abel adheres to a strict principle of pacifism, frequently refusing to outright kill his opponents. He has sworn never to kill a human again, a vow he upholds with rigorous determination even when it becomes extremely difficult for him. Flashbacks reveal that Abel once harbored a deep hatred for humanity, but this evolved into his current peaceful outlook on life. He acknowledges having committed grave sins in his past, which he attributes to his Crusnik form as a "mark of his sins," though the specific nature of these sins remains unclear. His current personality is largely defined by a desire for retribution and atonement. Abel holds complex feelings for Esther Blanchett, which stem more from her resemblance to a woman from his past than from romantic love. In his human state, he fights using a gun that fires silver bullets. As a Crusnik, he can transform into various forms by activating different amounts of nanomachines within his body. In his higher forms, he wields a massive scythe materialized from his own blood. It is later revealed in The Star Of Sorrow II that before the Armageddon, Nightroad served as a Commander in the UN Air and Space Force, where he was involved in the "Red Mars" project.
