Summary
Fujita is a magic user operating within the Magic user’s domain under the employ of En, a potent sorcerer. Despite his position, Fujita is remarkably inept at magic, rarely producing any magical smoke unless he or a loved one is in immediate danger. This limitation was highlighted when he and a companion were intercepted by Caiman, a nonuser in the Hole whose mutations grant him immunity to magic. After Caiman killed Fujita’s friend, Fujita managed to escape by using his smoke to tear a door between realms, an act that demonstrated unexpected skill. Driven by a desire for revenge, Fujita attempted to return to the Hole armed for battle but was intercepted by a messenger from En. He was instead assigned to locate the user responsible for transforming Caiman into a saurian. Investigation pointed to Ebisu, a specialist in reptilian transformation, whom Fujita remembered encountering in the Hole with his late friend. He rushed to save her before Caiman could kill her as well. Fujita arrived just in time to pull Ebisu from Caiman’s jaws after she had broken her fingers trying to use her smoke against him. While En ordered a high-ranking official named Noi to heal Ebisu’s physical injuries, the trauma erased her memory and regressed her personality to that of a young child. Noi and Shin were subsequently dispatched to eliminate Caiman, with Fujita joining them to seek vengeance and to keep an eye on Ebisu, as everyone waits for her memories to return.
