Moriya, Suwako

Moriya, Suwako

Summary

Suwako Moriya serves as the extra boss of Mountain of Faith and acts as the deity of the Moriya Shrine. Despite her role, she claims the shrine does not technically belong to her, a fact she notes in both Reimu’s and Marisa’s story routes. She asserts that it is officially Kanako’s property because she was defeated by the other goddess and willingly relinquished control. In Subterranean Animism, Suwako appears in the scenarios featuring Reimu and Yukari, where she reveals an industrial revolution project undertaken by Kanako. This initiative provokes Reimu’s anger, resulting in her being sent to the Hell of Blazing Fires. Historical accounts reveal that during ancient times, Suwako ruled a small kingdom and commanded the Mishaguji, powerful curse gods that had amassed significant faith to curse births, harvests, militaries, and various other aspects of life. Only Suwako possessed the ability to tame these deities. When gods from the Yamato region invaded her territory, claiming they would unify all kingdoms to form a single nation known as Japan, Suwako resisted. She fought using the finest steel weapons of the era, but Kanako simply held out a thin vine, causing Suwako’s massive steel arsenal to instantly rust away. Recognizing the disparity in their divine powers and her inevitable defeat, Suwako valiantly forfeited and surrendered her kingdom. It is believed that Sanae is her only direct descendant, though Sanae remained unaware of this lineage until the events of Subterranean Animism.
