Summary
Manta Oyamada is an intelligent yet anxious teenager who is perpetually armed with a massive compendium containing all human knowledge. Although he lacks Shamanic abilities, he possesses a sixth sense that allows him to perceive supernatural entities. His demeanor is highly expressive and often panicked, a trait exacerbated by his unusual height, which has repeatedly landed him in trouble. He was once mistaken for a shy nature spirit and was even cut open to serve as a hostage during You Asakura’s battle against Faust VIII. In the manga and anime, Manta serves as the narrator, helping audiences follow the plot more easily. In the English dub, he is called "Morty," a nickname derived from Mortimer. Creator Hiroyuki Takei revealed that the character was inspired by Japanese pop singer T.M.Revolution, an detail shared in a March 2004 English Shounen Jump interview.
