Summary
Stephen serves as a member of Near’s investigation team alongside Lidner and Rester, eventually playing a crucial role in the effort to stop Kira. When suspicions begin to mount against Mikami, Near tasks Gevanni with tailing him, analyzing his meticulous routine, and uncovering his ties to the Death Note. Prior to the final confrontation with Light at the warehouse, Gevanni retrieves both the authentic and counterfeit Death Notes from Mikami, tampering with the pages of one fake notebook. Near then creates a second counterfeit to replace the original, which becomes the instrument of Light’s ultimate defeat and provides Near with the key evidence needed to prove Light’s identity as Kira. While searching for the real names of SPK members, Mikami uses his Shinigami Eyes to view Stephen’s true name as Stephen Loud. In a one-shot chapter set three years after Light’s death, Stephen appears in a single panel with Rester and Lidner. Although he has no dialogue or significant involvement in the short story, his presence implies that he continues to work under Near, who has assumed the mantle of the new L.
