Summary
Sakyou serves as the mastermind and leader behind Team Toguro during the Dark Tournament. A man of immense wealth accumulated through a lifetime of gambling, he projects an image of calmness, intelligence, and composure, though his malevolent nature subtly influences his demeanor. Although he appears only sparingly throughout the Rescue Yukina arc and the Dark Tournament saga, he is revealed to be the true antagonist of both storylines, manipulating Team Toguro as his personal puppets without the other characters realizing the depth of his control. Sakyou is one of five siblings, but he diverged significantly from the path taken by his brothers and sisters, who became civil servants. Instead, Sakyou descended into madness, developing a voracious appetite for blood. Over the course of three years, his experiments escalated from dissecting frogs and fish to cats and dogs, and ultimately to human beings. He eventually entered the gambling world, employing a psychological tactic where he threatened to wager his own life to intimidate opponents. Most adversaries would back down upon seeing his sincerity, a scenario that occurred five times in his career. One such instance involved the Black Book Club, an organization he previously belonged to. Coincidentally, the final time he wagered his life occurred during the final rounds of the Dark Tournament. During his tenure with the Black Book Club, former Spirit Detective Shinobu Sensui witnessed one of their experiments involving Sakyou. The group forced several humans to slaughter demons retrieved from a portal between the human and demon planes, after which the humans bathed in the demons' blood. Enraged by this atrocity, Sensui murdered all the humans involved, an event that sparked his growing disillusionment with humanity.
