Tokaki

Summary

Born under the star of Legs with the true name Ranva Ham, Tokaki is a Byakko Celestial Warrior who appears to be a nineteen-year-old, though he is actually one hundred and nine years old. His birthday falls on November 11. He is married to Subaru, a woman he adores deeply and would do anything to protect, despite his own extremely lecherous nature. Tokaki habitually comments on the attractiveness of young women he encounters, including Miaka, yet his love for Subaru remains unwavering. He also holds a fatherly affection for Tatara and Tamahome, regarding the latter as a son. After Subaru expelled him from their home due to his constant infidelity, Tokaki traveled through the four cardinal realms. During his time in Konan, he discovered Tamahome, a bullied child he recognized as a Celestial Warrior, and trained him in martial arts to ensure he could one day protect his priestess. The two reunited when the Suzaku Warriors arrived in Sairō to seek Byakko’s Shinzaho, but the encounter was strained. Having witnessed the tragic separation of Tatara and Suzuno, Tokaki believes that Miaka and Tamahome are doomed to part ways once the priestess completes her duty and returns to her world. Hoping to spare them that pain, he attempts to steer Tamahome toward a romantic relationship with his adopted daughter, Xi-Fang. Tokaki’s combat abilities include teleportation, augmented by his knowledge of pressure points and the use of earrings as weapons. It is believed that he and Subaru perish together near the end of the original Fushigi Yûgi narrative, as Subaru’s spell inadvertently causes fatal internal damage to both of them. However, they are later seen alive in the Eikoden novel, which is set ten years after the events of the main story.
