Cangse Sanren
Summary
Cangse Sanren was a disciple of the renowned rogue cultivator Baoshan Sanren and served as the mother of Wei Wuxian. She eventually departed from the celestial mountain, adhering to the tradition that those who leave Baoshan Sanren’s domain must never return. Even after her departure, her exceptional cultivation remained well-known among Baoshan Sanren’s disciples, as noted by Xiao Xingchen. Although she attracted several suitors and Jiang Fengmian fell in love with her, she ultimately chose to marry the servant Wei Changze. Tragically, the couple was killed during a night-hunt when Wei Wuxian was still a young child. Implied details from the novel suggest that Cangse Sanren shared a personality with her son: outgoing, straightforward, and mischievous. Wei Wuxian’s few memories of her involve her constant laughter. She once shaved off Lan Qiren’s goatee, an act that Wei Wuxian later repeated when he attended the Cloud Recesses for his studies. She appeared to be selfless, teaching her son to remember the kindness of others rather than his own sacrifices, believing that letting go of such burdens leads to true freedom.
