Asakura, Mikihisa

Summary

Mikihisa Asakura is the father of the protagonist Yoh Asakura in the Shaman King series. In the manga, he competed in the Shaman Fight as part of Team Kabbalahers alongside Redseb and Seyram. He possesses two spirits, a tanuki and a kitsune, and utilizes stones as mediums for his Over Souls. Before becoming a shaman, Mikihisa was an unemployed musician living in an apartment with two other band members. He met Keiko Asakura while busking near a train station after she had been dumped by her boyfriend. She paid him ten yen to play a song, during which she revealed she had been rejected because she could see ghosts. Keiko invited him to her rented house, and their relationship began there. Since Keiko was the only child of Yohmei and Kino Asakura with no brothers, Mikihisa married into the family under the Japanese muku no naru tradition. He adopted the Asakura surname to ensure the family line continued. When Keiko was pregnant with Hao, Yohmei Asakura, as the head of the family, ordered the infant’s immediate death upon birth to prevent Hao from growing up in time for the Shaman Fight. Because Keiko was carrying twins and there was no way to identify which fetus was Hao, Yohmei decided to kill both babies to be safe. Immediately after the first baby was delivered, Yohmei summoned his shikigami. However, as he hesitated to kill his own grandchild, the Spirit of Fire appeared and destroyed the shikigami. The Spirit of Fire then attacked Yohmei, but Mikihisa blocked the strike, suffering severe facial burns. Before Mikihisa could summon his spirits to attack Hao, the Spirit of Fire moved him out of the way. With the Spirit of Fire and Hao gone, Keiko gave birth to Yoh. Mikihisa now wears a mask to conceal the burn scars he received from the Spirit of Fire. Blaming himself for failing to kill Hao, Mikihisa underwent rigorous global training to compensate for his perceived incompetence. During this time, he met Tamao Tamamura, who became his apprentice and often trained with him. During the Shaman Fight, Mikihisa’s role was to watch over Yoh, frequently observing battles from the shadows atop trees. He also imparted parts of the Cho Senji Ryakketsu to Yoh and his group, including the FumonTonkou to Ren. A close friend of Professor Camel Munzer, the father of Redseb and Seyram, Mikihisa took responsibility for looking after the two after the professor’s death. Having learned of the Golem’s destructive power, he formed Team Kabbalahers to ensure the Golem did not fall into the wrong hands. Team Kabbalahers was one of the top six remaining teams in the Shaman Fight main tournament. During the decisive battle between Team The Ren and Team Funbari Onsen, Team Kabbalahers withdrew, allowing both teams to qualify alongside X-I and the Hoshigumi. In the anime, Mikihisa plays the same role as in the manga; however, since Redseb and Seyram are manga-exclusive characters, he is never mentioned as being part of any team in the main tournament.
