Kurono Kei serves as the main protagonist of the series Gantz. A seventeen-year-old tenth grader standing at 168 cm tall, he is summoned by Gantz alongside Kato following a fatal subway accident. The incident occurs when Kurono attempts to save a homeless man sleeping on the tracks and is subsequently struck by a train. Early in the narrative, Gantz addresses him with derogatory terms like "Bitch" and "Loser," but eventually settles on using his surname, Kurono, as the series progresses.
