Basch Zwingli, representing the Swiss Confederation, is an eighteen-year-old with the appearance of his adult self, though his actual height remains unknown. He lives in Bern, the capital of a nation nestled within the Alps, known for its policy of eternal neutrality. His birthday falls on August 1st, and he is associated with the Edelweiss. His appearance features a blonde bob that rests just above his shoulders. While earlier illustrations depicted him with blue eyes, both recent artwork and the anime adaptation portray his eyes as green. He speaks German, French, Italian, and Romansh. In his youth, Basch was close to Austria, frequently intervening to rescue Austria from beatings inflicted by Hungary. However, their relationship soured due to misunderstandings involving their superior, leading to a bitter split. Currently, they despise one another, and Basch actively denies any past friendship. He maintains a protective and doting relationship with Liechtenstein, whom he saved from starvation after WWI despite his own lack of food. He refused repayment, viewing it as his duty as a neighbor. He has worked as a mercenary for the Vatican and owns three pet goats named Eiger, Jungfrau, and Mönch, after famous Swiss mountains. He firmly denies the stereotypical image of riding magic swings or wearing a milk-maid dress while playing with goats and eating cheese, a notion that baffles Japan. Additionally, he becomes aggressive if Italy runs through his property without pants. His name is written in katakana as Basch, a romanization more accurate than "Vash" due to German phonetics.
