Antoinette, Marie

Summary

Born on November 2, 1755, Marie Antoinette was married to the Dauphin at the age of fourteen to solidify the political alliance between her mother, Empress Maria Theresa of Austria, and the Dauphin’s grandfather, King Louis XV. Following her wedding, she discovered that Madame du Barry, the King’s mistress, harbored deep animosity toward her. Horrified by rumors regarding du Barry, the princess resolved to never speak to her. During this period, she also encountered Count von Fersen, who eventually became her lover. Madame du Barry, who was constantly scheming against both Marie Antoinette and Oscar, finally achieved her goal of being acknowledged by the Queen. However, following the death of Louis XV, du Barry was sentenced to death. Left feeling isolated after numerous conflicts with her husband, Marie Antoinette became despondent. Count von Fersen, who had previously left France on Oscar’s advice, returned, sparking rumors about the Queen’s relationship with him that forced him to depart once again. In her depressed state, Marie Antoinette formed a close friendship with the Duchess de Polignac, a connection that ultimately contributed to her ruin. She is characterized as a "lively, silly girl of shoujo manga."
