Hatchan

Summary

Hatchan, widely referred to as Hachi, is an octopus fish-man who possesses limited intelligence but excels as a swordsman specializing in rokutōryū, or six sword style. He engages in combat with Zoro during the Arlong arc, where he is ultimately defeated despite Zoro being weakened by a fever and severe blood loss from previous injuries sustained against Mihawk. Although Hatchan can display cruelty toward humans similar to his crewmates, he is generally helpful and friendly, evidenced by his polite demeanor and offering Zoro a ride across a bay on his back upon their first meeting. A title page arc, which was not adapted into the anime, depicts Hatchan embarking on various adventures that lead him to meet a mermaid and eventually establish a floating takoyaki restaurant. Flashbacks in Sea-Floor Stroll reveal that he and his former crewmates Chu and Kuroobi had planned to open a takoyaki shop when they were younger. His nickname Hachi translates to eight in Japanese, a nod to his octopus physiology. While the suffix chan typically denotes endearment, Hatchan insists his name is Hatchan and rejects Hachi as merely a nickname. Author Oda has clarified that the chan in his name refers to the Chinese surname Chan rather than the diminutive suffix.
