Summary
Ryuji Otogi is a sixteen-year-old student at Domino High School who stands 179 centimeters tall with a B blood type. Born on February 28 and weighing 64 kilograms, he has a particular fondness for Chinese cuisine while disliking vinegared dishes. In the original narrative, Ryuji is portrayed as a gifted game inventor and the creator of Dungeon Dice Monsters. His life was orchestrated by his father, Mr. Otogi, also known as Mr. Clown, who raised him as a brilliant player to exact revenge on Sugoroku Mutou. This vendetta stemmed from a Shadow Game called the Devil's Board Game, which Sugoroku won, causing Mr. Clown to age fifty years overnight as a Penalty Game. By enrolling in the same school as Sugoroku’s grandson, Yugi Mutou, Ryuji was intended to defeat Yugi in a series of games and claim the Millennium Puzzle. However, through their encounters, Ryuji was moved by the spirit of the games and could not bring himself to hate Yugi. He ultimately rejected his father’s vengeance and joined Yugi’s group of friends, displaying a serious, quiet, yet level-headed and intelligent demeanor. In the second anime adaptation, the influence of Ryuji’s father is removed, and his backstory is significantly altered. Instead, it is revealed that Ryuji befriended Pegasus, who grew fond of Dungeon Dice Monsters, and Ryuji sought to help market the game. After losing to Yugi, Ryuji found that Pegasus was no longer interested in their previous agreement. Consumed by anger and bitterness, he blamed Yugi for cheating during the match against Pegasus. Upon discovering the truth, Ryuji befriended Yugi and his companions, frequently joining them on their adventures. Although he is arrogant, sarcastic, and often the most negative member of the group, he remains smart and level-headed. His personality frequently clashes with Honda, particularly regarding Shizuka, whom both boys have a crush on in this version of the story.
