Nakano, Azusa

Summary

Azusa Nakano is a serious and somewhat mysterious rhythm guitarist who joins the Light Music Club as a new student. A self-proclaimed novice who began playing in the fourth grade under the influence of her jazz-musician parents, she brings a level of maturity and technical skill that contrasts with the club’s lax atmosphere. She is often bewildered by the group’s focus on tea parties and cosplay, preferring to practice, yet she is deeply impressed by the quality of their music despite their lack of discipline. Known for her tsundere tendencies, she struggles to admit her feelings and is easily calmed by cakes or physical affection, such as being petted. After trying on cat ears and meowing, she earns the nickname Azu-nyan from Yui, who frequently hugs her. In the band, Azusa looks up to Mio as an experienced and mature musician, though she occasionally makes unintentional remarks about Mio’s insecurities. She also admires Mugi’s appearance and eventually teaches her guitar when they are alone. Yui frequently seeks her advice and maintenance help for her instrument. Azusa has a low tolerance for sun exposure, getting tanned and sunburned easily even with sunscreen, and suffers from separation anxiety, worrying that her one-year-older friends will leave her upon graduation. To comfort her, the other girls gift her a turtle named Ton-chan. Outside of band practice, Azusa spends time with Ui and Jun. After the senior members graduate, she becomes the new Light Music Club president alongside them. Together with new members Sumire and Nao, they form the Wakaba Girls. During a summer training camp, Azusa doubts her ability to lead, but Sawako reassures her that there is no single way to be a president. She is also persuaded to become the band’s vocalist, overcoming her hesitation to perform at the school festival. Azusa prefers practical clothing like pants, keeps her room tidy, and listens to western music and jazz.
