Kenshirou
Seiyuu / Dub
Summary
Ken, short for Kenshirou, serves as the sixty-fourth successor of the Hokuto Shin Ken style. He bears seven scars on his chest shaped like the Hokuto Shichisei, or Big Dipper, which were inflicted by Shin. A powerful and largely stoic figure, Kenshirou feels driven to punish evildoers and possesses abilities far beyond normal human limits. His command of the ancient martial art Hokuto Shinken enables him to kill or cripple opponents with a simple touch. While this often results in gruesome explosions of body parts, the style offers various other lethal methods. Additionally, he can utilize this art for healing or manipulating behavior. Later in the narrative, he acquires techniques from other martial arts. When enraged, his spiritual energy peaks, typically causing his shirt and jacket to dramatically tear away, revealing his muscular torso. This wardrobe malfunction occurs despite the lack of clothing stores, with his garments mysteriously reappearing in subsequent arcs. His signature line is Omae wa mō shindeiru, meaning "You are already dead," which he usually utters just before a villain's head explodes. Following the nuclear war, Kenshirou sought peace with his fiancée Yuria until Jagi provoked Shin, a jealous rival from the Nanto Seiken school, to challenge him. Shin defeated Kenshirou, carved the seven scars into his chest, and left him for dead. Before this incident, Kenshirou was more lenient, sparing Jagi’s life after defeating him during an assassination attempt. When confronting these old rivals again, Shin, Jagi, and Raoh all comment on his newfound ruthlessness. The initial arc focuses on Kenshirou’s quest to rescue Yuria from Shin. In the first chapter, he meets Bat, a thief, and Lin, a young girl he rescued, who join his journey. Throughout the series, he protects the weak and innocent from gangs in the post-apocalyptic wasteland, earning the title "Savior of the Century's End." His abilities grow stronger through battles with members of the Nanto Roku Seiken and his Hokuto Brothers. Though emotionally reserved like many male heroes of 1980s media, Kenshirou stands out in anime culture for being sensitive and kind-hearted, breaking the era's rigid expectation that men do not cry. He is known for openly weeping over the suffering of innocents and the deaths of noble enemies. While this trait was minimized in the 1980s anime adaptations, it returned in the 1990s versions and later.
