Tetsuo Shima is Kaneda’s best friend since their preschool days and serves as the second principal subject of the story's theme. Within the gang they both belong to, Tetsuo is portrayed as the black sheep, silently enduring a deeply rooted inferiority complex. Although he admires Kaneda, he simultaneously harbors strong resentment toward his own reliance on him. Once his psychokinetic abilities manifest, Tetsuo rapidly transforms into Kaneda’s nemesis. Driven by a desire for Kaneda’s motorcycle, which represents status and power, he seeks to prove that he is supremely powerful and no longer in need of protection.
