Summary
Naota Nandaba serves as the twelve-year-old protagonist of the series. His name, which translates to honesty in Japanese, was chosen by his father for that very reason, a fact highlighted in the episode Fooly Cooly. Unaware of his own potential, Naota possesses the right kind of head, making him a suitable channel for an N.O. He is fixated on projecting a mature image and strives to appear nonchalant, a demeanor most evident in the monologues that bookend each episode. Throughout these narrations, he insists that nothing amazing ever occurs in his life, even as the story unfolds with surreal and absurd events. Naota idolizes his older brother Tasuku, viewing him as the true epitome of adulthood, especially in contrast to the other grown-ups in his world, such as his father, grandfather, and teacher, whom he considers immature. He remains deeply attached to Tasuku’s memory, carrying the older brother’s baseball bat and spending time with Tasuku’s former girlfriend, Mamimi. Like Amarao, Naota is particular about his beverages, avoiding anything sour, bitter, or pulpy, and he also dislikes spicy food, though he is advised by Amarao to reduce his consumption of sour drinks.
