Summary
Dufaux, known as Dufort in the English adaptation, serves as Zeon's bookkeeper. He is an extremely quiet and reserved individual, appearing nearly emotionless, and possesses psychic abilities. His past was shrouded in mystery until he revealed his history to Kiyomaro and Gash near the conclusion of the Faudo saga. The details of his backstory differ significantly between the manga and the anime. In the anime version, Dufaux explains that he has had powerful psychic abilities since childhood. Because of this, he was confined to an asylum where he was experimented on and possibly abused for nearly his entire life. This trauma led him to vow to destroy humanity for the suffering they caused him. Zeon noticed this hatred and eventually released him from the facility. The manga presents a different origin story. Dufaux was sold by his own mother to a mad scientist for ten thousand dollars. The scientist subjected him to mental and emotional experiments throughout his childhood. The ordeal culminated in an ultimate test that resulted in the destruction of the lab, located at the North Pole, and granted Dufaux his freedom. Forced to survive in the freezing snow, he eventually encountered Zeon, who hired him as a bookkeeper. In the manga, Dufaux possesses a technique called "Answer Talker," which allows him to understand how any attack is applied and how to defend against it. This ability awakens when a human dies and then returns to life, such as when Kiyomaro was killed by the mamono Riou and revived within Faudo Tower. While the anime leaves Dufaux's fate ambiguous after escaping Faudo, the manga shows him wandering off after Zeon departs. He seeks a new purpose after being used for so long and eventually begins using his "Answer Talker" abilities to help others, even if reluctantly. He comes to appreciate what Zeon and Gash had done for him. Dufaux later returns to assist Kiyomaro in developing and controlling his own "Answer Talker" ability to prepare for the fight against Clear Note. During the ten-month lull while Clear recuperates in Goomu's dimension, he uses his powers to sense the mamono within each of their heads to determine their necessary training styles. In the original Japanese version, Dufaux is voiced by Hikaru Midorikawa. In the VIZ Media dub, Dufort is voiced by Dave Wittenberg.
