Kiriyama, Rei
Summary
Rei Kiriyama is the central figure of the series and a five dan professional shogi player who achieved his title during middle school. Following a traffic accident that claimed the lives of his parents and sister, he came under the guardianship of his father’s friend, Kouda, who became his shogi mentor. Upon turning professional and finishing middle school, Rei severed ties with Kouda and chose not to pursue a traditional high school education. However, driven by a newfound desire for schooling, he eventually enrolled in a high school a year late. He resides in the city of Rokugatsu-chou and enjoys playing shogi in his leisure time.
