Rosine

Rosine

Summary

Rosine is a female apostle who sacrificed her own parents to assume the appearance of a female elf, complete with the wings and antennae of a luna moth, small moth-like limbs near her hips, and a helmet resembling a luna moth head. This transformation was driven by the legend of a child named Peekaf who believed himself to be an elf, resulting in the loss of his human parents. Calling herself the Queen of the Elves, her true form is a monstrous female Luna Moth. She dwells in the Misty Valley, where she terrorizes a nearby village by deploying an army of insect demons disguised as elves to devour livestock and humans, while also capturing children to transform them into more insect demons using cocoons. Guts, Puck, and Rosine’s former friend Jill journey to the Misty Valley to confront her. Rosine offers to turn Jill into an elf apostle, tempting her with the promise of flight, though Jill remains uneasy about the elf demons’ penchant for killing each other for amusement. Guts discovers and destroys the elf demon cocoons, prompting an enraged Rosine to battle him until she is severely injured and unable to continue. As Guts prepares to deliver a killing blow, Jill shields Rosine with her body. Although this fails to stop Guts, Jill’s father arrives and shoots him with an arrow before he can act. Guts is then attacked by the Holy Iron Chain Knights, led by Farnese. Mortally wounded, Rosine finally comprehends the moral of Peekaf’s fable and, in her delirium, attempts to return home to her parents before succumbing to her injuries and falling to her death. In some translations, she is referred to as Roshinu. Rosine makes a cameo appearance in the 22nd episode of the anime, where Rickert spots her hovering over the center of a lake before the camp is attacked by other apostles. She is seen standing apart from the horde as they devour the wounded Hawks.
