Zoisite
Seiyuu / Dub
Summary
Zoisite, referred to as Zoycite in the English anime adaptation, serves as the third member of the Shitennou and holds the second-lowest rank among them. At approximately sixteen or seventeen years old, he is the youngest, least mature, and most effeminate of the group. Named after the mineral zoisite, he oversees the Dark Kingdom’s European Division. In the manga, Zoisite’s narrative begins when he witnesses Queen Beryl reprimanding Jadeite after a failed mission. Following Nephrite’s death, Zoisite is overcome with grief, screaming the name of the fallen king until Kunzite intervenes, counseling him to rely more on his intellect than his predecessors. His initial objective is locating the Ginzuishou, but after Tuxedo Mask’s involvement incites a mass search in Tokyo, Zoisite shifts tactics to harvesting energy. He utilizes the Tokyo Tower to drain the power of citizens exposed to its video waves. While Kunzite is frequently seen with him, their bond is strategic rather than romantic in this version. Zoisite later devises a scheme to steal energy via rental movies that hypnotize viewers. Although he effortlessly defeats the Senshi and prepares to execute Sailor Moon, he is slain by Sailor Venus’s Crescent Boomerang. The anime presents a different dynamic, with Zoisite appearing concurrently with Nephrite’s rise to power. He frequently mocks Nephrite, comparing his intellect unfavorably to Jadeite’s, and resents being passed over for the position. His powers are nature-based, utilizing fire, ice, sakura petals, teleportation, telekinesis, illusionary disguise, limited clairvoyance, and supernatural speed and strength. Seeking counsel from Kunzite, whom he shares a romantic relationship with, Zoisite is advised to monitor Nephrite and his new Black Crystal. As Nephrite’s connection to Naru awakens his dormant human emotions, Zoisite kidnaps her to demand an exchange for the Black Crystal. When Nephrite refuses and rescues her, one of Zoisite’s youma assassins mortally wounds Nephrite. Zoisite steals the dropped Black Crystal and departs, leaving Nephrite to die in Naru’s arms. Zoisite then pursues the Ginzuishou, revealed to be split into seven components known as the Nijizuishou or Rainbow Crystals. He competes against the Senshi and Tuxedo Mask, eventually challenging the latter to a duel that reveals their secret identities to one another. Using underhanded tactics, Zoisite secures all seven crystals and, defying Queen Beryl’s orders, attempts to kill Tuxedo Mask. This act triggers the awakening of Usagi’s memories as the Moon Princess. Her tears over her fallen love cause the crystals to merge into the Silver Crystal, transforming her into Princess Serenity. Overpowered, Zoisite flees to the Dark Kingdom, where Queen Beryl punishes his insubordination by mortally wounding him. He dies in Kunzite’s arms, surrounded by flowers and sakura petals, after begging for a beautiful end. In the English dub and various international versions, Zoisite is depicted as a woman, possibly to obscure his relationship with Kunzite and his use of female disguises.
