His moniker translates literally to "Dragon of the Wooden Sword," reflecting his signature weapon, the bokutou. Born on December 24, 1980, he is a Capricorn with blood type O. Ryu is distinctively dressed in flamboyant 1970s attire, typically featuring white suits paired with dark shirts that have oversized collars, cuffs, and lapels, along with pointed shoes. His combat gear consists of a vest-style shirt that leaves his stomach exposed and pants that sometimes flare out above the ankles. He sports a prominent foot-long pompadour, which frequently gets cut short by You Asakura and others. In the English dub of the anime, where his name is changed to Rio, he is given a Hispanic accent.
