Fujiwara, Chiyoko

Summary

Raised in Japan during the turbulent years of World War II, Chiyoko assisted her domineering mother in managing their family’s confectionery business. Her quiet life was interrupted when a film studio director approached her with an offer to star in an upcoming production. Without giving Chiyoko a chance to speak, her mother harshly rejected the proposal, dismissing the acting profession as disreputable. Later that day, Chiyoko was knocked to the ground by a man fleeing from the police. Although he was in a rush, he paused to help her up and offer an apology. Touched by his courtesy, Chiyoko distracted the pursuing officers, allowing the stranger to hide within her store room. During their time together, he shared stories of his home and expressed his desire to complete a painting of a snowy landscape once the war concluded. Chiyoko noticed a skeleton key hanging around his neck, which he referred to as the key to "the most important thing there is." She asked him to wait until the following day to explain its significance. That opportunity never arrived. Upon returning to school, Chiyoko learned that the police had discovered the man hiding in her room and found his blood-stained key left behind. A hint from the store clerk suggested the man had fled toward the train station, prompting Chiyoko to rush after him. She failed to catch him in time but made a solemn vow to return the key to him at any cost. This determination inspired her to defy her mother’s wishes and pursue a career in filmmaking.
