Okudaira, Yoshimichi

Okudaira, Yoshimichi

Summary

Yoshimichi Okudaira serves as the patriarch of the family and is the husband of Shouko. While he maintains a moderate awareness of his children’s lives, his attempts to engage with them are often viewed as unwelcome and exasperating. His persistent and tactless inquiries into their personal affairs mirror Shinobu’s own behavior so closely that the young man has remarked his father is even more relentless than he is. Yoshimichi is a dedicated presence at Akira’s school events, attending the drama festival for two consecutive years despite Akira only serving as a stagehand during the first occasion. He is fully aware of Shinobu’s relationship with Mogi and has boldly questioned the couple in front of Shouko and Akira about whether they have "done anything funny" together, a remark that deeply disgusts the Okudaira women. In contrast to his wife, who acts as the strict disciplinarian, Yoshimichi prefers to spend his time reading the newspaper. When Akira and Shinobu engage in fights, he merely asks what is wrong before returning to his activities, leaving the resolution of their conflicts to others.
