Liechtenstein, representing the Fürstentum Liechtenstein with its capital in Vaduz, is a petite and soft-spoken nation nestled securely between Austria and Switzerland. Celebrating her birthday on July 12th and symbolized by the lily, she maintains a deep, familial bond with Switzerland, whom she regards as an older brother despite the lack of any blood relation. This reliance is profound; Switzerland’s military even serves to protect her, and the open border allows citizens of both nations to move freely across their territories without restriction. Her history with Switzerland began shortly after World War I. Although Liechtenstein itself did not participate in the conflict, it found itself surrounded by warring nations, leading to severe famine and poverty that threatened its very existence. Just as she stood on the brink of collapse and losing her sovereign status, Switzerland intervened, adopting her as his little sister. This act of salvation fostered immense respect and adoration in Liechtenstein toward her “brother.” In a poignant display of this bond, she once cut her long braided hair into a short bob to better resemble Switzerland.
