Summary
Viscount Vittorio Martini, a nobleman from Italy's Piedmont region, was the father of Alfredo and Bianca and the husband of Viscountess Patrizia Martini. In his youth, he served as an army officer, fighting against the Austrian forces at Custoza. During this battle, Vittorio risked his life to save Carlo Alberto, the King of Sardinia, an act that contributed to the Austrian defeat. In recognition of his bravery, the King awarded him a medal bearing a "mark of benediction," which became a cherished family heirloom and a lifelong source of pride for Vittorio. However, this treasure also brought tragedy to the household. Vittorio’s younger brother, Maurizio, and his wife Grazela coveted the viscount’s wealth, particularly the medal. Driven by greed, the couple set fire to the Martini mansion, resulting in the deaths of both Viscount Vittorio and Viscountess Patrizia.
