Bruno made a brief appearance in the episode To Master the Onixpected!, though fans speculate he may have already appeared as a shadowy Trainer wielding Nidorino and Onix in the movie Pokémon - I Choose You!. He is voiced by Maddie Blaustein in English and Toshiyuki Morikawa in Japanese. During Ash’s preparations for the Kanto Pokémon League, the group learned that Bruno was training in the mountains near Pallet Town. Brock was eager to meet him, so Ash, Brock, and Misty traveled to the area, where Onix were known to grow to abnormal sizes. After Bruno rescued them from a massive Onix, Ash and Brock pleaded to become his students. Bruno agreed on the condition that they obey his every command, which involved tedious chores like chopping wood, carrying water, and carving chopsticks. Misty grew suspicious that Bruno was a fraud. To test Bruno’s skills, Brock attempted a sneak attack, expecting Bruno’s reflexes to easily deflect it. Instead, Brock nearly knocked Bruno unconscious. Bruno then confessed that he possessed no special training techniques and had simply wanted help with his chores. Later, when the group was chased by another giant Onix, Bruno calmed the creature, which then joined his team. He explained that the true secret to training is the mutual care between Trainers and their Pokémon. Bruno demonstrates exceptional physical power and agility, utilizing them with near superhuman expertise.
