Kiyoko

Summary

Designated as Esper #25, Kiyoko stands out as the sole female member of the group. Visually, she is characterized by her wrinkled green skin, long white hair arranged in braids, and a pink nightgown. Flashbacks from the anime reveal a younger version of her with healthy skin, light brown hair, and a pink dress. Her physical condition is severely compromised; she remains bedridden due to extreme frailty, a likely consequence of the experiments and drugs administered to her. Despite her immobility, she holds significant narrative weight, having predicted the destruction of Neo-Tokyo and recognized Akira’s connection to Tetsuo. Kiyoko’s origins suggest she was an orphan acquired by the original Tokyo government alongside other children for a secret project led by Colonel Shikishima. The initiative aimed to cultivate psychic abilities for military and political ends, where she formed friendships with Takashi, Masaru, and Akira. The program concluded when Akira’s power became uncontrollable, triggering a psychic explosion that wiped out Tokyo. In the aftermath, the survivors founded Neo-Tokyo, while the remaining Espers were isolated to maintain secrecy. To prevent them from surpassing Akira, the trio was regularly dosed with drugs that stunted their growth and caused premature aging. Kiyoko’s decline was so severe that she required life support to survive. Personality-wise, Kiyoko is gentle and nurturing, often caring for Takashi and Masaru with maternal devotion. She serves as the de facto leader for final decisions within the group, relying on her wisdom and perceptive abilities to guide them. Even Colonel Shikishima seeks her counsel regarding future courses of action. Driven by a belief in destiny, she feels a deep responsibility to ensure that the fates of those around her are fulfilled.
