Kaolinite

Summary

Kaolinite, known as Kaori Night in the manga and Kaorinite in the English anime adaptation, serves as the devoted assistant to Professor Tomoe and harbors deep romantic feelings for him. She makes her debut in Act 24 of the manga and Episode 90 of the anime. A notable divergence exists in her interaction with Hotaru; while the anime version frequently mocks and provokes the girl, the manga portrays her showing concern for Hotaru, who nonetheless feels that Kaori’s presence in the home indicates a lack of propriety. Throughout the series, Kaolinite displays various abilities, including levitation, teleportation, limited shape-shifting, and the capacity to wield her hair as a weapon, a trait shared with Mistress 9. In the anime narrative, she is the first member of the Death Busters to openly assault individuals possessing pure heart crystals, utilizing the bio-engineered Daimons she helped create. Her primary objective is to locate the three Talismans, which she is unaware are held by Sailors Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. Her monsters target Sailor Mars, Sailor Mercury, and Sailor Jupiter. In episode 102, she detects the brilliance of Sailor Moon’s Pure Heart Crystal and pursues it. The Sailor Senshi mobilize to stop her, leading to her defeat by Sailor Uranus. During the battle, a glass-based attack intended for the Senshi rebounds, encasing Kaolinite in a glass pillar that causes her to plummet from Tokyo Tower. She reappears in episode 113 as Hotaru Tomoe’s guardian, identifying herself as Kaori (though the dub retains the name Kaorinite). It is later disclosed that Professor Tomoe revived her. However, she feels overshadowed by the Witches 5 and becomes jealous of both them and Hotaru. By episode 123, consumed by hatred, she steals the Pure Heart of Sailor Chibi Moon, Hotaru’s best friend. This crystal is absorbed by Hotaru’s possessed form, causing her to awaken as Mistress 9, the Messiah of Silence. Her final moments involve hearing congratulations from Professor Tomoe before Mistress 9 throws her into an electrified wall for having fulfilled her purpose. The manga presents a different trajectory for Kaolinite. Unlike the anime, where her origins remain obscure, the manga reveals through a Professor Tomoe flashback that she became Kaolinite after being struck by lightning during a storm while the pair attempted to reconstruct the damaged body of his daughter, Hotaru. Upon rising, her eyes glow. Holding the title "Magus Kaolinite," she occupies a rank that the Witches 5 strive to achieve. This position grants her access to the Tau Star System's crystal, and the Witches 5 answer directly to her rather than Tomoe. She views them strictly as servants, displaying irritation when Mimete seeks her aid. It is suggested that she desires to be Pharaoh 90’s partner, replacing Mistress 9, a ambition Mistress 9 finds amusing. Once Mistress 9 awakens, she commands Kaolinite to eliminate the Sailor Senshi. Although Kaolinite subdues the Guardian Senshi, they are rescued by Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. The Senshi confront Kaolinite in the President’s office of Infinty Academy, where she transforms into a Daimon. She is ultimately destroyed by Super Sailor Moon’s "Rainbow Moon Heartache" attack.
