Dalton originally served as a guard under the tyrannical King Wapol, but he fundamentally opposed the ruler's cruel treatment of his subjects. During a meeting with Princess Nefertari Vivi’s father in Alabasta, Dalton witnessed the injustice firsthand. His perspective shifted dramatically after observing Hiruluk’s noble sacrifice, which inspired him to rebel against Wapol. However, he was quickly subdued and imprisoned, where he endured constant mockery from Wapol and his henchmen, Chess and Kuromarimo. When Wapol abandoned his kingdom to escape Blackbeard’s invasion, Dalton seized control and prevented the island from descending into chaos, thereby earning the trust of the populace. Later, when Monkey D. Luffy and his crew arrived on Drum Island seeking a doctor to cure Nami during their mission to escort Princess Nefertari Vivi to the Alabasta Kingdom, they encountered Dalton and his men, who initially mistook them for robbers. Dalton informed them that the only healer capable of saving Nami was a witch known as Dr. Kureha. Even after Wapol returned and re-subdued Dalton, the townspeople and even the top twenty doctors in the region continued to support him. Dalton was severely injured by Wapol while defending the townsfolk from arrows fired by one of the king’s bodyguards. In response, he planned extreme measures, including blowing up Wapol’s castle. Following Luffy’s defeat of Wapol and his subsequent removal from the island, the people of Drum elected Dalton as their new king. They renamed the island Sakura Kingdom, inspired by the special chemical created by Hiruluk that turned the snow pink. Dalton appears again in chapter 440, where he shows Doctor Kureha the new bounties of the Straw Hat Pirates. He prefers living in the village rather than in the castle. He possesses the Ushi Ushi no Mi, Model: Bison, a Devil Fruit that allows him to transform into a bison or a half-human, half-bison minotaur-like form. In the English dub, this is referred to as the Ox Ox Fruit, granting him the ability to transform into an ox.
