Otakon 2026 Clocks Record 47,049—Swords, Square Enix & Summerween Tease

Otakon’s 32nd outing packed the Walter E. Washington Convention Center harder than ever. Otakorp tallied 47,049 people across July 31–August 2—about 3,000 above last year’s ~43,000 and past the 46,000 peak set for the con’s 2024 anniversary run. That count folds in pre-regs and walk-ups plus staff, dealers, artists, industry, guests, contractors, and press, with a final audit still possible.
Under the Swords and Sorcery banner, the weekend felt like more than a numbers flex. Square Enix leaned in hard: Final Fantasy XIV job-art badges, localization director Michael-Christopher Koji Fox and community producer Toshio “Foxclon” Murouchi on stage, wax-food artisan Kunio Oka sculpting in-game dishes live, and the new Music of Square Enix symphony (Chrono Trigger through NieR and beyond) anchoring the hall. Sunday also slotted Otakon onto the Kagurabachi Anime World Tour with an advance Episode 1 chunk—same circuit that hit Anime Expo—before the Studio Cypic show’s planned April 2027 Crunchyroll bow.
Con Chair Victoria MacEntee framed the finish as a guild raid complete, then pointed fans at next year’s calendar: August 6–8, 2027, still in D.C., under the cheeky theme Summerween. First names on that roster already drop weight—John Eric Bentley (Barrett in Final Fantasy VII Remake), Emi Lo (Lucy in Cyberpunk: Edgerunners), and Kaiji Tang (Gojo in Jujutsu Kaisen)—a clear signal that the record crowd is the new baseline, not a one-off spike.
