Darwin's Game Leaps to Big Screen with Star Cast and 2027 Release

The survival thriller that hooked readers with its deadly smartphone app and superpowered clashes is making the jump to live-action cinema. Toei announced on July 9 that FLIPFLOPs' long-running Darwin's Game manga will hit Japanese theaters on March 12, 2027, complete with a teaser trailer and striking visual that capture the story's intense tone.
Leading the cast is Taishi Nakagawa as Kaname Sudo, the ordinary student pulled into lethal stakes. Joining him are Kōki as the sharp Shuka, Mei Hata as Rain, Fuju Kamio as Ryūji, and Kōji Yamamoto as Hiiragi. Veteran director Fumihiko Sori, behind the live-action Fullmetal Alchemist films and Tomorrow's Joe, takes the helm alongside screenwriter Hayato Miura.
Serialized in Bessatsu Shōnen Champion from 2012 until its 2023 conclusion, the series sold over ten million copies and received a 2020 anime adaptation. Its core premise—a mysterious game app that forces players into real battles using otherworldly "Sigils" while a shadowy force pulls the strings—remains a fan favorite for its mix of strategy, action, and conspiracy.
With Sori's track record adapting beloved properties and this ensemble assembled, the project signals a bold cinematic expansion for the franchise. Early teaser material already highlights the raw energy and character dynamics that defined the manga, setting high expectations for both longtime fans and new audiences when the film arrives next spring.
