During the Second Sino-Japanese War, Japanese forces invade the village of Nangunlong in Hebei Province. Lost and confused, they approach 13-year-old cowherd Wang Er Xiao for directions. Seeking vengeance for his parents' murder and wanting to protect his fellow villagers, Wang Er Xiao feigns cooperation, leading the soldiers instead into an ambush set by the Chinese army.
