Joe Yabuki is a young man who habitually settles disputes with his fists. Though he lacks manners and self-control, he possesses remarkable combat instincts developed on his own. While wandering through the Doya slums, Joe gets into a fight with a local gang and defeats them despite being heavily outnumbered. His performance draws the interest of Danpei Tange, a former boxing coach who has fallen into alcoholism. Seeing Joe's natural ability, Danpei wants to transform him into Japan's premier boxer. Joe initially dismisses Danpei as just another drunk, but after Danpei saves his life, he agrees to move in with him and learn boxing. However, Joe's stubborn personality makes him a difficult student, and he often slips back into his old habits. To make it in the harsh world of professional boxing, Joe must learn to trust his mentor and master the skills he teaches. The road to becoming a pro is filled with challenges that will push Joe to his absolute limits.

At Shinsei High School, soccer is almost a full-contact sport, and the new coach, Teppei Matsuki, is strict and demanding, pushing his team to win at any cost. Shingo Tamai, a rebellious student, and his friend Ohira refuse to join Matsuki's team and instead form their own, initially playing for fun and struggling to compete with Matsuki's players. As their skills improve, they participate in matches against other teams, growing stronger and more strategic. Eventually, they face the powerful Asakase High School squad and its star player, Misugi Yan, in the school tournament's championship match. Alongside these main events, there are side stories involving past conflicts, injuries, and a mixed-race player searching for his identity and his incarcerated mother. Shingo hones his abilities as a center forward and eagerly anticipates a showdown with a visiting Brazilian team. Despite suffering a severe injury during a game, his exceptional talent—acknowledged even by legendary Brazilian player Pelé—coupled with his unwavering resolve, helps him recover with the assistance of a friend of his former adversary Matsuki. Shingo then leads his team to victory.

Kozue, a dedicated high school volleyball player, aspires to earn a place on Japan's national team. The story traces her rise from local tournaments through the national finals and eventually to an international volleyball championship. As Kozue advances, she confronts the darker sides of success, including unrealistic expectations, arrogance, and jealousy.

A prideful karate master, Tadashi Sawamura, steps into the kickboxing arena to prove his art's dominance but is knocked unconscious and left in a coma by a fighter practicing the new discipline. Once he recovers, his trainer Endo persuades him to take up kickboxing training so he can restore his honor. The story draws loosely from the real-life career of champion kickboxer Tadashi Sawamura.

Gorou, the non-athletic editor-in-chief of the school newspaper, joins numerous club activities, including various sports teams, leading to disastrously hilarious outcomes.
