Best Fantasy Anime of 1979

Nobi Nobita is a fourth-grade boy living in Tokyo. One day, a round, blue cat-shaped robot without ears appears from inside his desk drawer. Nobita's great-great-grandson (or thereabouts) lives in the 22nd century, but because of Nobita's mistakes, the entire family has ended up in poverty. To fix this, Nobita's descendant sends Doraemon back to the past to help prevent Nobita from making those mistakes. Of course, this is a difficult task since Nobita is the weakest and least intelligent child in his class. However, Doraemon has a four-dimensional pocket on his front that contains cool gadgets from the future. With these toys, Doraemon tries to help Nobita. Unfortunately, Nobita also has a bad habit of misusing Doraemon's gadgets and landing himself in even more trouble.

After the murder of his mother by the villainous robot Count Mecha, young Tetsuro has sunk into a life of street delinquency, his mind occupied solely by thoughts of vengeance. He dwells in a far-off future where humans may journey to another planet to trade their flesh for eternal mechanical bodies. His one ambition is to gather enough stolen funds to ride the Galaxy Express 999, a train that traverses space and carries passengers to the planet of robots. One day, while fleeing from the authorities, he encounters the gorgeous Maetel, whose face bears a striking resemblance to his late mother. She proposes to take him aboard the Galaxy Express 999, granting him a robotic form and a chance to face Count Mecha. As the voyage unfolds, the pair meets an array of colorful individuals, including Captain Harlock and Queen Emeraldas, and Tetsuro gradually discovers what it really means to be human.

This animated film takes inspiration from Japanese art and silk screens, incorporating elements of Japanese mythology and traditions. It follows Taro, a young boy who embarks on a journey to a faraway lake in order to rescue his mother, who has been transformed into a dragon.

In "Unico: Black Cloud White Feather," the goddess Venus grows envious of the beautiful human girl Psyche and blames her pet unicorn, Unico, for Psyche's good fortune, which protects her from Venus's harmful schemes. Unico possesses the special power to bring happiness wherever he goes, though it remains uncertain whether this comes from his true nature or the magic of his horn. Venus exiles Unico, and the West Wind carries him across different times and places. He lands in a heavily polluted industrial city, where he encounters a sickly girl named Chiko, whose health worsens because of the contamination from a nearby factory that darkens the sky. Determined, Unico sets out to raise Chiko's spirits, cure her illness, and destroy the factory.

In "Nutcracker Fantasy," Clara goes to see her Aunt Gerda and Uncle Drosselmeyer. Her aunt tells her frightening tales about the Ragman, a strange and spooky character who turns children into mice when they don't go to bed on time. This Ragman keeps a constant watch over sleeping youngsters, seeking new targets. Before Clara drifts off to sleep, her eccentric uncle gives her a wooden nutcracker doll. He feels a bit awkward because only the heart on the toy is perfect, but Clara adores the gift. As she falls asleep, she later wakes up to the noise of mice squeaking.

The TV series "Triton of the Sea" (1979) was produced in two parts, but only the first segment was screened in theaters as part of the Uchuu Senkan Yamato Festival. The second part was later released on home video by Nippon Columbia five years after. Subsequent DVD releases in 1999 and 2002 combined both parts for sale together.

Santi, a timid Spanish boy, cares for a tiny whale named Josephina, a creature visible only to him. Josephina can change her size and fly, leading Santi through various magical experiences and helping him cope with the difficulties of growing up. His life shifts when Santi begins to discover new interests beyond his familiar world and builds a stronger bond with his previously remote father.

This anthology brings together children's stories that were first published in the famous magazine Akai Tori, which was in circulation from 1918 to 1936.
