Calimero is a small black bird who wears a shell on his head and dreams of flying like other birds. Every time he tries to take flight and fails, the other birds mock him. His girlfriend Pricilla, however, stays by his side and encourages him. Despite his peculiar appearance, Calimero is very resourceful and comes up with a plan to achieve his goal of flying.

Audience engagement is promoted by having them submit guesses each Friday about which creature will ultimately save the world, with each mission spanning a full week of airtime. The original manga is said to have been quite shocking to early 1970s Japan, where the father was still often traditionally regarded as the head of the household.
