Synopsis
Inamura no Hi (1989) tells the true story of the 1854 Nankai earthquake and the tsunami that followed. Five samurai from the village saw the oncoming wave and urgently tried to warn their community to evacuate, but most people ignored them. As a final measure, they set fire to stacks of threshed rice, making the villagers believe their vital crop was ablaze. Since the rice harvest was crucial for survival, the villagers rushed to the fields to extinguish the flames. This plan succeeded: when the tsunami struck, it destroyed the lower villages but spared those who had fled to higher ground.
