A month after the Karakasa incident, the Inner Chambers begins to return to a semblance of normalcy. Yet for the ruling noble families, this normalcy means relentless scheming to preserve their influence and eliminate any danger to their authority. Their present target is Fuki Tokita, a high-ranking concubine and daughter of a merchant, who appears to be winning Lord Tenshi's favor—despite her unsuitable background to bear his heir. At the same time, supernatural phenomena continue to plague the Inner Chambers. Following several unexplained deaths within its walls, the residents reluctantly allow the enigmatic Medicine Seller to enter once more. He is the only one who can uncover the cause of these events and clarify Fuki's role in them.
