Synopsis
The short takes place in a coastal town in Kumamoto during the final days of summer 1996. Minato, a 10-year-old boy, lives an unstable life alongside his alcoholic father. His only pillar of strength is Ben-chan, a goddess who appears as a young girl on Benten Island, and the moments he spends with her are the only times he truly feels like himself. However, when Minato is about to be taken to a children's home and torn away from Ben-chan, he prays to a Shiranuhi—a mysterious light drifting above the sea—to grant him a single wish. That wish, steeped in hatred toward his father, eventually transforms into a curse. Note: The project was first teased at AnimeJapan 2024 at the CoMix Wave Films booth, where a visual was displayed with a description calling it a new animation project by a "rookie director."
Background
The film marks the commercial anime debut of director Ryou Katanosaka, a graduate of Seian University of Art and Design who previously directed the 2015 live-action film Tabinoyamabiko while working independently as a freelance filmmaker.
