Synopsis
The tale draws from classic Chinese folklore, centering on a young boy called Chenxiang. His mother is a goddess, while his father is a mortal. For this union, his uncle Erlang Shen, a stern and mighty deity, slays the father. The goddess mother flees and gives birth, but Chenxiang grows up unaware of his divine heritage. She owns a magical Lotus Lantern whose glow repels evil. When the boy is kidnapped by his uncle, the mother battles to rescue him. However, Erlang Shen proves triumphant, forcing Chenxiang to reside in his palace upon the sacred mountains. The uncle then imprisons his sister beneath a mountain as punishment for her transgressions. Though very young, Chenxiang manages to flee the palace, seizing the enchanted lotus lantern his mother lost during the fight. After surviving adventures alongside many beloved figures from Chinese mythology, Chenxiang matures into a brave youth. He must ultimately confront his uncle in combat to secure his mother's freedom, and in the process, he also falls in love.
