The Forest From the Future

Synopsis

C. W. Nicol, a Welshman, dedicates himself to restoring Japan’s depleted forests. Drawing on extensive global experience in environmental conservation—ranging from Arctic fieldwork to establishing national parks in Ethiopia—Nicol is drawn to Japan’s rich biodiversity, spanning from northern drift ice to southern coral reefs. Yet he is disturbed by the extensive deforestation and concrete-lined rivers driven by economic priorities. Inspired by his successful regeneration of the Afan Argoed Forest Park in Wales, Nicol commits to reviving nature in Japan. His goal is to cultivate forests that will flourish a century from now, fully aware he will not live to see them.
