In 1866, as the Tokugawa shogunate nears its end, a former samurai named Kumosuke Haguregumo lives without a care as the town's jester. Although he still carries his twin-bladed katana, his days are spent drinking, smoking, and flirting with the ladies, often coming home late at night. His wife and children—Shinnosuke and Ohana—are frequently distressed by his behavior. As Shinnosuke grows older, he begins to grasp the intricacies of their world. Bothered by his father's reputation, he strives to live an honorable life, but defining honor amid such chaotic times becomes increasingly difficult.
